Lohri is celebrated throughout India and on this 13 th of January, we are going to witness another celebration of this auspicious festival. Here are some facts you must know about Lohri.

Lohri commemorates the passing of the winter solstice. The ancient significance of the festival is both as a winter crop season celebration and a remembrance of the Sun God. Lohri songs mention the Indian Sun god asking for heat and thanking him for his return.

Lohri festival 

It is  one of most popular festivals in India. Celebrated with love and ardour, the festival of Lohri is observed to pay reverence to the winter solstice. However, it is largely known as the harvest festival of Punjab, and hence, it has a great significance for the people of Punjab. Some people believe that Lohri has derived its name from Loi, the wife of Saint Kabir. There is a legend amongst some people that Lohri comes from the word ‘loh’, which means the light and the warmness of fire. Lohri is also called lohi in rural Punjab. According to another legend Holika and Lohri were sisters.

Gajak  Peanut 

Its famous gazak in Uttar Pradesh It is a dry candy made of sesame seeds (til) or peanuts and  jiggery. The til is cooked in the raw sugar syrup and set in thin layers, which can be stored for months. It’s famous in gazak all over world .

 

Rewari

Rewari comes in various flavors and sizes though only two are varieties are famous.  One is white and another one is brown.

Sometime it is flavored with essence of fragrant screw pine (केवड़ा – Kewda )

Roll Gajak

Roll Gajak is very famous and usually comes in two variety, one which is with a soft condensed milk core and one without core. It is usually garnished with pista and other nuts.

 

Til Gajak

Til Gajak comes in small thin slabs which is also called चीकी (Chiki) or पट्टी (Patti) in some region. It may come plain variety and another variety which is usually garnished with pista and other nuts.
